Mothers'Union

The Mothers’ Union is a worldwide Christian organisation which has the support of families at its heart. Based on Christian principles, the MU works to support families and communities in the UK and around the world. MU members (and you don’t have to be a mother to join MU!) does this by supporting and promoting family life through prayer and love, worship and service.

The branch at St John the Baptist has a current membership of 22, we hold monthly meetings that come in different forms, with speakers, crafts, film discussions, trips or time for a coffee and a chat. We also regularly hold fundraising bake sales. Another important part of the life of the branch is the connection with the local school joining in with many of their projects and providing support to parents and teachers.

The St Nicholas branch with a membership of 12 holds monthly meetings, one or two fundraising events during the year and provides support to their local school with reading, crafts and cookery.

Both branches of the Mothers’ Union put together ‘Bags of Love’ in September of each year for the local Primary schools. Each bag contains a tea bag, tissues, and biscuits as well as a prayer and a small information sheet. These are given, along with a small posy of flowers, to parents or carers whose children are entering Year R.

The St John the Baptist Church branch of the Mothers’ Union was started over 125 years ago by the daughter of Mary Sumner, the MU’s founder.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Welcome

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at any of our services.

Where and When

We meet at three locations, throughout the month. For your first visit, if you arrive 10-15 minutes before the service starts you will be greeted by a Sidesperson or someone on our Welcome Team who will be wearing a Welcome lanyard.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the main service on a Sunday morning unless it is Cafe Church in which case we start with a light breakfast. This provides an opportunity for you to get to know people within the church community.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access to both churches, a sound loop for anyone who needs it and disabled parking. Large print format service sheets are always available for those that need them - just ask as you come in. If you need information on any of these aspects do get in touch.

All are welcome

Activities for children are available at the majority of our services. In terms of church services, there is something for everyone, whether it be traditional, contemporary or reflective.
